A Cairns business owner was devastated to find his Woree sportswear shop had been broken into last weekend with “brazen” thieves getting away with more than $10,000 worth of equipment.
Just two days later, Cameron Miller’s Mount Sheridan home was ransacked while his teenage son slept in his bedroom.
“I was angry, a little disappointed … and quite hurt,” Mr Miller said, reflecting on the recent robberies.
“Things like this affect your day-to-day operations. We’re not a big profit making business, a lot goes back into sporting organisations and charities.
“It’s hard when these things happen.”
The first burglary occurred overnight with Mr Miller returning to his workplace early on Saturday morning to discover the front door had been pried open.
A drone, valued at more than $7000, camera, work phone and merchandise were among the goods pilfered during the raid.
“They used a crowbar to get into the premises, got their hands in and unlocked the door,” Mr Miller said.
“I think they were looking for money, so all the cupboard doors were left open and a few things were moved around.”
Adding to his woes, Mr Miller said he couldn’t believe his bad luck when his son called him on Monday to tell him the family home had been plundered.
“It was a bit confronting for him,” he said.
“He’s only 15 years old. They cut a hole through the screen door and it looks like they got some pliers and popped the lock out on the back door.
“My son was feeling ill and at home. He called me at lunch time and said he was concerned that the back door was open and a few things looked like they’d been moved around.”
In all, around $5000 worth of items were taken from Mr Miller’s property with an Apple watch and iPad among the key valuables stolen.
“They’re all replaceable but you feel vulnerable,” Mr Miller said.
“It’s been a tough week. It gives you an ill feeling and I’ve been on edge all week.”
Authorities said the break-in to Mr Miller’s business is believed to have occurred between 4-4.45am on Saturday, February 10.
“The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact police,” a spokesman said.
Mr Miller said he was flummoxed as to how to stop crime in his community.
“Youth crime is obviously an issue around here. Questions have to be asked about the penalties these young offenders cop,” he said.
“A lot of politicians make promises about these things … but how do you stop it?”
Cairns is on the frontline of the state’s youth crime epidemic, with eight stolen car offences a week already committed thisyear. The Far North Queensland city has also recorded 22 homes break in offences every week of 2024 so far.
