Thousands of athletes from across the globe have descended on the Far North for the Cairns Ironman which kicked off this weekend.

Around 3000 athletes from 62 nations have registered to take part in the Ironman and triathlon on Sunday.

Cairns Airport chief executive officer Richard Barker said the figures demonstrated the powerful effect of hosting world-class events in Cairns, coupled with a strong aviation network.

“Each year, this exceptional event showcases our region to the globe, injects millions of dollars into the economy and provides a fantastic and inspiring spectacle for our community,” Mr Barker said.
