A man has died following a two-vehicle crash on the Gillies Range Road on Friday morning.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed a male motorbike rider collided with a ute at the intersection of Gillies Range Road and Downing Road just after 10am.

The motorbike rider sustained life-threatening injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

The 75-year-old male driver of the utility sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Investigations are continuing and police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has any relevant dashcam vision to come forward.

The latest road death brings the Far North road toll to 20 since the beginning of the year in an almost 50 per cent increase for the same time in 2023.

Earlier the Gillies Range Road was temporarily closed to traffic following the crash, but has since reopened, however motorists are urged to drive with care.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads confirmed both lanes of traffic reopened as of 1.26pm on Friday.

Emergency services were called to a section of the road near the Peets Bridge turn-off into Goldsborough at 10.05pm on Thursday.

One Queensland Fire Service vehicle was at the scene and a second appliance was en route earlier today.

Four police vehicles and a traffic control unit could be seen on the Cairns Regional Council flood cam feed at the corner of Gillies Range and Downing roads.

Police stated earlier on Friday that officers were responding to a serious traffic crash and traffic diversions are in place at the top, and bottom of the Gillies Range.

Motorists were urged to expect delays and avoid the area if possible

Queensland Traffic has advised the road was closed in both directions.

A text alert from Traffic and Main Roads stated at 10.54am the road was still closed and an update would be issued when conditions change.
