Barry Hare, co-owner of Edge Hill’s NewsXpress, is hoping his newsagency will have another lucky winner when Thursday night’s $200m Powerball is drawn.

Mr Hare said there had been a steady stream of punters buying tickets throughout the day on Wednesday.

He said he expected that to pick up after 5pm.

“The shop has had at least one customer in it all day with a couple times the line-up has grown,” he said.

“There is always a fair bit busier when the jackpot hits this high.”

The newsagency has been lucky in the past with a division one Powerball winner picking up $40m in 2019.

“The win in 2019 caused a lot of excitement and we were so glad to be able to sell the ticket to a local,” Mr Hare said.

“He did the right thing too and didn’t look to spend it all straight away and took his time to make decisions.”

Mr Hare said he hoped the store hadn’t lost its touch.

“It would be great to see a local syndicate win that way that huge amount of money can be spread to more people in the community,” he said.

“There is a lot you can do with that sort of money.”

Mr Hare revealed how he would spend the money if he won.

“The easy decision would be to stop work, then the money would have to go to the family first and there are lots of great charities doing good work in Cairns so it would be great to see some money going towards them,” he said.

“But, I just hope that we are able to sell another winner to one of our regular locals.”
