Video has emerged of a flock of chickens being chased by a cassowary in Far North Queensland.
The footage, which was taken by Mission Beach grocer Leny Capuchino on her Cassowary Coast property on Thursday, showed a large cassowary chasing a small flock of chickens in her yard.
“Basically, I was feeding my chickens at 6.45am before work and (the cassowary) always comes around, so I was going to take a photo, but ended up taking a video instead,” Ms Capuchino said.
Ms Capuchino’s filmed the large bird chasing her chickens away from their breakfast.
“He turned around while I was taking a picture, and I got a bit scared,” she said.
“When I finished filming the video he was coming toward me and that’s when I said, no I’m going inside,” she said.
Still, Ms Capuchino said she saw the funny side of the video.
“It is funny watching it over and over again, it makes me laugh because you don’t see things like that often, and we need a bit of laughter at the moment,” she said.
The incident was not the first time Ms Capuchino, who runs Leny’s Fruit and Veg stall in Mission Beach, has had cassowaries visit her property.
“I live in a five acre property in the rainforest and sometimes, because I’ve got a fruit and veg store, they go into my truck because it is full of fruits from the farm,” she said.
“They can smell it miles away, so they always come to my place.”
Despite the interruption to their breakfast, Ms Capuchino said her chooks were fine after the incident.
“They’re all right, they run fast anyway, faster than the cassowary. He couldn’t catch them,” she said.
