Police say a female worker has endured a horrific ordeal after allegedly being sexually assaulted during an armed robbery on Monday.

According to police a 53-year-old Kowanyama man was arrested following the incident that allegedly took place at a Mulgrave Road business in Cairns on February 12.

Police allege a man armed with a knife entered the store at 5pm and walked around before making demands while brandishing the weapon.

A customer in the store called police who arrived minutes later and arrested the man.

Police allege officers allegedly found a quantity of cash, cigarettes, and a knife in the man’s possession.

Police further alleged that the man sexually assaulted the female worker during the robbery.

The man has been charged with one count each of armed robbery and sexual assault.

He was refused bail and appeared before Cairns Magistrates Court on February 13.
