A remote Cape York childcare centre is damage control following the exposing of horrific abuse allegations levelled by police against an early childhood educator.
Police allege the assault of child occurred at the remote Cape York town.
According to ABC reports, the child was allegedly grabbed by the neck and head.
It’s alleged a cot mattress was used to smother the child’s face and the educator is alleged to have hit the child in the head, put her foot on their head and kicked the child across the floor.
On September 26, last year 46-year-old woman Edwina Amy Ling was charged with a number of offences including assault, assault occasioning bodily harm and torture.
“As the matter is currently before the courts we are unable to comment further,” a police spokeswoman said.
Ms Ling appeared in the Bamaga Magistrates Court on July 22. It’s understood no plea has been entered.
The centre, which the Post has chosen not to name, declined to comment when contacted by the Cairns Post and an extensive list of questions emailed to the NPA Family & Community Services chief executive Tailisa Yusia has not been answered.
The centre is excluded from a system aimed at improving the quality of early childhood education services known as the National Quality Framework on the basis it receives direct funding from the Australian government.
This means it is not assessed or rated against national quality standards however umbrella organisation the NPA Family And Community Services Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation declared an income of $21.2m in 2024 according to the latest annual report.
A large proportion of that figure is made up of government grant revenue.
The matters of Ms Ling were adjourned at her last court appearance and will return to the Bamaga Magistrates Court on September 16.
