Innisfail fatal crash: Two men die after car collides with truck south of Cairns

Authorities have identified the two men killed following a truck crash on a major highway south of Cairns.

Two men have died after the car they were travelling in collided with a truck on a major highway south of Cairns.

The men were travelling west in a sedan on the Palmerston Highway in Coorumba around 10.20pm on Tuesday when the car collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Images from the scene show a truck laying on its side with its contents spilt on the ground as emergency crews work to clear the scene.

Multiple paramedics attended the scene with two patients assessed with life-threatening injuries.

Both the male driver of the sedan and his passenger died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a male in his 60s, was transported to Innisfail hospital with non-life-threatening but serious chest and pelvis injuries.

The male driver of the sedan, a 67-year old East Innisfail man, and his passenger, a 60-year-old Nerada man died at the scene.

Its understood the truck and dog rig was hauling raw sugar from the Atherton Tablelands.

The double fatality brings the Far North fatal road toll to 12 since January 1 which is an increase on the nine deaths recorded for the same period in 2023.

At about 11.30am the highway reopened to traffic.

Forensic Crash Unit continues investigations are ongoing.
