With two months before he officially becomes a qualified tradesman, Mitch Taylor has been voted Far North Queensland’s hottest tradie as voted by Cairns Post readers.
Nominated by a co-worker as a joke, Mr Taylor said he did not expect to get so far in the competition.
“I saw the post on Facebook because another co-worker nominated me as a joke and we had a good laugh about it. I thought it was funny and definitely didn’t expect to get this far,” Mr Taylor said.
Mr Taylor, who has two months left of his TAFE apprenticeship, said he got into the trade because he had always liked building things, and with the help of his brothers, nabbed a job with a local carpentry business.
“I like seeing the progress of the build, how it goes from nothing to seeing the whole house come up and doing the fine, intricate stuff,” he said.
“Plus I can build anything I want and I’ve got the ability to do my own thing.”
Despite a demand for trades around the country, including in the Far North, Mr Taylor said less and less school students, particularly boys and young men, were inclined to take up tools after graduating.
“There’s a definite shortage of apprentices coming through. Our business alone is flat out looking for apprentices but when you call up the schools, no young fellas want to work or do work experience,” he said.
“It’s hard to find anyone and when you talk to the fellas in the other trades, everyone’s in the exact same boat.”
