The man tragically crushed to death after the car he was working on fell off a jack at Aeroglen has been identified as a highly-regarded Cairns local.

Emergency services were called to Aeroglen at Tom McDonald Dr at 12.14pm on Thursday to treat Peter Coyle, who was crushed under a Holden Commodore in the carpark of Hinterland Aviation.

The 46-year-old was rushed to hospital with head and chest injuries.

However, he couldn’t be saved and was pronounced dead shortly after.

Hinterland Aviation chief executive Andrew Clair made it clear Mr Coyle was not an employee or a passenger of the carrier.

“This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones,” he said.

“We understand the matter is being handled by the appropriate authorities, and we have no further comment.”

It’s understood the man was investigating engine trouble in the car park after dropping a passenger at the general aviation terminal when tragedy struck.

Close family friend Anique Dudley said Mr Coyle would be greatly missed by all who knew him.

“He was always happy, he loved helping people and there was not a bad bone in him, he was very loved, he was,” she said.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating following a fatal traffic incident on March 6.

The Queensland Police Service stated the 46-year-old was underneath a raised vehicle when the vehicle fell on him.

According to reports from the scene a person was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle when Mr Coyle was working under the car, however exactly how the accident happened is not clear.

Police investigations into the death are ongoing.

In 2024, 33 people were killed on Far North roads in an 83 per cent increase on the 2023 total.

The death has been classified as a reportable fatal traffic crash but won’t be included in Transport and Main Roads data as the incident did not happen on a road.
