A popular bakery south of Cairns has taken out top spot in The Cairns Post’s recent poll to find the best pies in Far North Queensland.

For the second time since 2019, Babinda Bakery has been voted as home of FNQ’s best pies by Cairns Post readers.

Now, the baker behind Babinda Bakery’s chart topping pies has revealed his secret to success.

Babinda Bakery’s new owner Bun Keo said he was very excited to hear his pies were voted Far North’s best, especially after taking over the business in November last year.

Mr Keo, who spent 20 years as a baker in New Zealand, only moved to Australia in October 2023.

“I used to win awards in New Zealand for my pies. I’m happy to hear I won an Australian one too,” Mr Keo said.

“The chunky steak and cheese pies and chicken and vegetable pies were very popular in New Zealand. At the moment the chicken, cranberry and brie pies and butter chicken pies are very popular here.”

Mr Keo said his secret to success was having the right chef and best pastry.

“Our secret is we’ve got the right cook, we caramelise our chunky steak and for the chicken pie, we make creamy sauce. We use high quality ingredients, butter and cream. Here, I’m trying to create a new pastry like the one I used to win awards with,” he said.

“The staff taste the pies before we put them in the cabinet. They really enjoy them and are very happy and we’ve got good feedback from people, so I’m very happy.”
