From a special appearance by Babinda’s original Harvest Queen to decked out floats, markets and activities, thousands of people came out to celebrate the 60th Babinda Harvest Festival.

Last year’s Harvest Queen Caitlin Kruckow said it was special to be part of the milestone event.

“I’ve grown up in Babinda so I’ve been in the floats since I was little,” Ms Kruckow said.

Despite a wet morning, Ms Kruckow said the rain petered off in time for the street parade.

“It was raining all morning, but it didn’t rain on the parade and it was lovely to see members of the community some out and support us,” she said.

Ms Kruckow said her highlights were watching previous Harvest Queen’s take part in the parade, including the original Harvest Queen Joan Dickson, and handing over the crown to this year’s winner.

Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller said community spirit shone throughout the event.

“There were lots of activities for the kids including face painting and the lollydrop which the Harvest Festival is known for – the helicopter did three trips around and the kids had a whale of a time,” Cr Moller said.
“You could feel the community spirit overflowing.”

Highlights included restored tractor and motor vehicle displays, market stalls, children’s activities and a marching band.

However for Mr Moller, the grand parade has always been his highlight.

“I think it’s got an old-fashioned, community country fair feel to it that really kicks the afternoon off,” he said.

“What I like about it is the friendliness and atmosphere. Everyone’s there for a good time.”
