The latest feature of a $55m Cairns Airport international terminal overhaul now means passengers leaving the Far North can enjoy a swish new lounge experience as offshore arrivals track toward pre-pandemic levels.

Baggage reclaim belts also began operating this week which effectively doubles the number of bags that can flow out to passengers.

The second stage of the multimillion-dollar upgrade follows the transformation of the check-in and arrivals halls, replacement of all check-in counters and installation of four new airconditioned glass airbridges.

Guests departing from the international terminal can now enjoy a newly opened airport lounge experience.

Operated by Escape Lounges, the new area offers premium facilities and complimentary dining in comfort for $60 pre-booked or a walk-in cost of $70.

At the end of February total international arrivals numbered 459,257 and with four months of the financial year remaining the airport expected total arrivals to hit 760,000 before June 30.

The projected figure has not been achieved since 2008 when 758,438 offshore passengers touched down in Cairns.

In FY 2019 before the pandemic shut down travel Cairns Airport welcomed 685,980 international passengers.

Cairns Airport chief executive officer Richard Barker said the terminal enhancements had come at an ideal time.

“We’re just weeks away from welcoming two new international routes; Jetstar’s direct flights from Christchurch and Fiji Airways’ services to Nadi. These year-round services will inject a combined 125,000 seats into the market each year,” he said.

“We are also heading into the busy Easter school holiday period, and the commencement of Air New Zealand’s annual seasonal service from Auckland.

“We expect to see visitors extending their stay in Tropical North Queensland during April and May, with Easter happening so close to the Anzac Day long weekend.

“Significant international conferences are also scheduled in Cairns during the coming months, which will bring thousands of business travellers to the region.

“The new Escape Lounge will be a welcome addition for those visitors, along with holiday-makers and locals who like to relax and recharge before a flight.”

The final construction phase includes installation of the second baggage belt, refurbishment of the departures area with new flooring and seating, remodelled bathrooms, and dining and retail enhancements.

Completion of the terminal upgrade is expected to wrap up toward the end of 2025.
