IT'S been the subject of roadworks for months - now this busy Toowoomba intersection is finally back open to traffic.

Flood mitigation works on both the East Creek and West Creek have been ongoing since May, meaning vehicles have had to detour off the Warrego Highway to surrounding city streets.

The intersections where works took place were at James and Kitchener Sts, and James and Water Sts.

Historic discovery at roadworks site

The highway at Kitchener St appeared to reopen late yesterday, and was confirmed to be open to traffic on Wednesday morning.

The upgrades took place to protect the intersections during high-intensity and high-velocity rainfall like in the devastating 2011 floods.

The project was delayed after archaeological discoveries at the Kitchener Street site, including a timber bridge, corduroy crossing, cobblestone path and hundreds of small artefacts.
