North Queensland police have released new details about a fiery truck crash that closed the Bruce Highway on Monday night.
Both B Double drivers, a Townsville man, 55, heading north and a Brisbane man, 62, travelling south, were lucky to escape physical injury in the crash at Bemerside on the southern side of the Cardwell Range about 7.50pm.
“The vehicles have made contact whilst passing on the Seymour River Bridge causing the north-bound truck to lose steering and rupturing the fuel tanks leading to diesel fuel being spread over the highway,” Senior Sergeant Geoff Bormann said.
“The north-bound vehicle has pulled to the side of the road where it immediately burst into flames.”
Snr Sgt Bormann, the officer in charge of Ingham Police Station, said the Townsville man “was not injured and managed to grab personal items before fleeing the wreck”.
He said multiple emergency responders managed the scene in the wake of the accident, including Queensland Fire (QFD), Ambulance (QAS) and Police (QPS), as well as Transport and Main Roads and heavy-vehicle recovery teams from Townsville.
“Fortunately there were no injuries reported but the north-bound truck was completely destroyed by fire,” he said.
“Investigations into the cause of the incident are continuing.”
