A Gold Coast couple have avoided jail after pleading guilty to various charges of supplying cocaine, GHB and meth over several months in 2022.
Brooke Elizabeth Grady, 36, and partner Garran Kenneth Ma, 33, respectively a beauty nurse and owner of a Molendinar automotive workshop, appeared in the Southport District Court before Judge Jodie Wooldridge KC on Wednesday facing a string of drug charges, including unlawfully supplying cocaine.
Grady pleaded guilty to 10 counts of supplying methamphetamine, cocaine and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), while Ma pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying cocaine, and one count of possessing a mobile phone used in the commission of an offence.
The offences were committed between April 3 and July 9, 2022.
Police executed a search warrant on the couple’s home at Nerang on August 2, 2022, locating a number of illicit substances and drug paraphernalia.
Most seriously, police found 2.36 grams of meth and 4.57 grams of cocaine, for which Grady was sentenced in 2023 to 18 months’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered parole.
During the search warrant police also seized the couple’s phones which had messages on the encrypted messaging app Threema that provided evidence of Grady supplying dangerous drugs.
Over the messaging app, Grady offered one customer GHB, initially for $7700, before being bartered down to $7000, at which point the sale went ahead, the court heard.
Police also found evidence of Grady messaging Ma to supply a bag of cocaine for two of her friends on a trip to Noosa, and Ma agreeing to supply an unknown person with a bag.
Additionally, the court heard that Grady had collected an ounce of methamphetamine from an unknown supplier, allowed a person to consume part of the meth as a taste-tester, and sold five grams of the substance at an unspecified price.
Defence lawyer Michael Gatenby told the court his clients became recreational users of drugs during Ma’s employment in the hospitality industry, and their use became unsustainable due to stressors caused by their difficulties falling pregnant.
At their sentencing, the pair told the court that they were sorry for their crimes.
“I’ve learned from my mistakes,” Grady said.
“I’m sorry. I’m very embarrassed about the whole thing.”
Grady and Ma told the court that they had recently become parents, with Ma telling the court he also has the additional responsibility of owning his own business.
“I’m deeply ashamed and I’m sorry,” Ma said.
“I’ve moved on far from that over the years and turned my life around.”
Judge Wooldridge sentenced Ma to 18 months’ probation with no conviction recorded.
Grady was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered release on parole.
