A joyride in a Melbourne suburb has ended in tragedy, with two teenage boys found dead in a stolen car after it veered off the road.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

Two teenagers have died after they struck a tree in a stolen car during a joyride in Melbourne and became trapped in their vehicle.

Another driver called police about 2.35am on Sunday after passing the crash scene on Kelletts Road in Rowville.

Two teenage boys were found in the vehicle and declared deceased at the scene.

Police revealed on Sunday that the car the teenagers were travelling in was one of two vehicles stolen from a home on Emica Parade in Knoxfield overnight.

Victoria Police Superintendent Matthew Baynes said the vehicle was taken in an aggravated burglary in between 9.30pm and 1am, and that the Toyota had likely crashed not long before it was found by the passing driver.

The second car taken from the address, a silver Honda, is yet to be found.

Police could not confirm if the second car was involved in the crash or if its occupants had seen the Toyota lose control and veer off the road.

Mr Baynes said while a serious offence had been committed in the stealing of the vehicles, there would be two families grieving their loved ones on Sunday.

“There had been some rain, and there’s a possibility the vehicles were travelling at high speed ... inexperienced drivers in a stolen car in poor conditions – it’s a real recipe for disaster,” he said.

“The people in this car may have been involved in criminal offending, and that is disappointing and really concerning for us, but ultimately there is now no ability for them to try and correct whatever errors they have made.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or have dashcam/CCTV footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
