Surprising new details have come to light after a major Queensland highway was shut down over reports of a shooting.

A man and woman target shooting on private property sparked a shutdown of a major Queensland highway after members of the public reported gunshots to police.

Officers declared an emergency after receiving reports shots were fired towards the Bruce Highway near Maher Rd in Coles Creek about 12:15pm on Friday.

The highway near Maher Rd was shut in both directions and residents were warned to stay indoors as police investigated.

Officers discovered two people target shooting on a private property along Maher Road, that impacted nearby residents and resulted in a police report.

“No one has been physically injured as a result of the incident,” a police spokesman said.

“There is no ongoing threat to the public.”

The emergency declaration was revoked and the road was reopened shortly after 2pm.

A man and woman are assisting police with their inquiries as investigations continue.
