Police suspect a Melbourne man missing since 2009 has been killed.

In a statement early on Tuesday morning, police say Farhad Jamal was last seen in 2009, but his family reported him missing in 2021.

“Investigators are of the belief that he has met with foul play,” police said in the statement.

“He was well known within the Melbourne Afghan community and also associated with some known criminal identities.”

Mr Jamal was 36 years old in 2009. He lived in Reservoir and frequented the Dandenong and Port Melbourne areas.

He was also an amateur boxer, training and having associates at gyms in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

Mr Jamal was last seen at a supermarket on Market St in South Melbourne on Tuesday April 28, 2009.

Police say they do not know what clothes he was wearing at the time.

There have been no further sightings of Mr Jamal since, and his bank accounts have not been touched, police say.

“Farhad was reported missing by his family in 2021 to the missing persons squad who have made a number of inquiries in relation to his disappearance since then,” a police spokesperson said.

On Tuesday, police released an image of Mr Jamal hoping to draw out information on his disappearance. Police also thanked the people who had provided information so far.
