The NSW government will probe the state’s greyhound racing industry amid allegations of animal abuse.

On Thursday, NSW Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris appointed The Hon Lea Drake to lead an independent inquiry into Greyhound Racing NSW.

The inquiry will investigate complaints about GRNSW’s governance, operations, track safety and animal welfare issues, and will look into complaints made by whistleblowers.

Mr Harris said he is “absolutely committed” to ensuring a “competitive, responsible and sustainable” industry that maintains animal welfare and integrity.

“It is important that the governing bodies and senior leadership of the racing codes meet these standards,” he said.

“I take these various concerns about GRNSW very seriously and this inquiry, using the full investigative powers of GWIC, will conduct a thorough and wide-ranging review of all relevant issues.”

Mr Harris said the NSW government will work alongside GRNSW and other industry participants to preserve the “viability and longevity” of the industry.

GRNSW welcomed the announcement of the inquiry and Ms Drake’s appointment.

“Ms Drake is one of Australia’s most respected and distinguished investigators and mediators with a reputation for forensic inquiry and critical thinking,” GRNSW’s acting CEO Wayne Billett said on Thursday.

“We welcome the opportunity for external examination of our processes and record, including the modernisation process that has been undertaken in recent years.”

The announcement comes just a day after GRNSW’s chief executive Robert Macauley resigned.

The inquiry will report their findings to the government by December 13 2024.
