Radio host Ali Clarke reveals breast cancer diagnosis

A beloved radio star whose shock breast cancer diagnosis led to a spike in women booking screenings has called in to her regular show to give listeners an update on her sudden battle, revealing she is still a “bit wonky” following an emergency surgery.

Ali Clarke, the host of Adelaide’s Mix 102.3 morning show, shocked listeners last week with the revelation she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would undergo a mastectomy.

On Tuesday morning, she told co-host Max Burford and stand-in Hayley Pearson that Friday’s surgery had gone well but she was now “walking into doors” and a “bit wonky”.

“I’m actually home now,” she said.

“It’s just unbelievable getting back into your own bed.

“The nurses and doctors are amazing, but it’s just wonderful to be home and the kids can fight over not looking after me.”

The 47-year-old mother to three kids broke down crying last week when she revealed her dramatic cancer scare and told Burford and Pearson on Tuesday that she was “definitely up and down”.

“I was on a high, not just a drug-assisted one, and then you sort of do come crashing down,” she said.

In a lighthearted moment, Clarke said she had been “completely lit” on some of the drugs the doctors had given her after the surgery and may have hallucinated seeing poodles in her hospital room.

She said the after effects of the surgery had not been as confronting as she had feared, telling listeners her children had asked to see the results and had not “recoiled”, which she called a “massive relief”.

“It was nowhere near as confronting as I’d built it up in my mind,” she said.

The material collected during the surgery is now being tested and Clarke said her battle would hang on the outcome of those results.

“Going really well, everything has gone well so far, but I’ve still got to wait for some results,” she said.
