Melbourne underworld figure Tony Mokbel has been seen on a morning walk with a woman thought to be his new girlfriend, after securing bail in a bombshell court ruling last week.
Mokbel, 59, was bailed by the Court of Appeal on Friday, as an impending appeal over his convictions, tainted by his police informant lawyer, draws closer.
After 18 years behind bars, the court found last week that Mokbel’s appeal has a reasonable chance of success.
His sister has put up a $1m surety on Mokbel adhering to 30 bail conditions.
Part of Mokbel’s argument for release was the stability he had found in a long-term girlfriend, with a mystery brunette woman seen by his side constantly since his highly publicised release.
The pair were seen leaving his home on Monday morning, dressed in activewear.
Mokbel wore a burgundy t-shirt with fitted black trackpants and a black cap, while his partner donned black tights and a black spray jacket.
Since his release from custody, Mokbel has been seen making the most of his newly found freedom.
On Friday, he spent time with his children and visited his mother’s grave for the first time.
On Saturday, a 75 inch TV and flatpack furniture was delivered to his sister’s home.
He was also seen going for a walk with family, before jumping in a car and heading to the police station for his daily check-in.
Mokbel told reporters on Saturday he had been instructed by his legal team “not to talk to anyone”.
Despite the constant attention he has received since leaving prison, the 59-year-old has made no attempt to shake off the media.
There have been no decoy vehicles or disguises used.
Mokbel was a central figure in Melbourne’s gangland wars of the 1990s and 2000s, and after being arrested in Greece after a year on the run, pleaded guilty to a host of drugs charges.
Mokbel is now fighting to overturn his convictions in the wake of the Lawyer X scandal which saw his longtime legal confidant, Nicola Gobbo, unmasked as a police informer in 2019.
The actions of Victoria Police and Ms Gobbo have either nullified or cast serious doubt on the convictions of multiple men, and Mokbel’s appeal case is “very strong”, one of the Court of Appeal justices said on Friday.
He is currently eligible for parole on June 2031, with the appeal over his convictions to be heard later this year.
