Man swims to island to evade police after he was shot following an alleged stabbing

A man has swam to an island and climbed a tree in an attempt to evade police after he was shot following an alleged stabbing.

Police were called to a Wilks Park in NSW’s southeastern city of Wagga Wagga about 12.30pm on Thursday following reports of a shooting.

Police were told a 33-year-old man had stabbed a 42-year-old man with a pair of scissors.

The 33-year-old was then allegedly shot by a third man who fled the scene, police were told.

The 42-year-old had left the scene before police arrived and later presented to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.

He suffered a wound to his neck and was treated and released on Friday.

Police found the 33-year-old in the Murrumbidgee River not far from Wilks Park, however the man refused to get out of the river.

The 42-year-old had left the scene before police arrived and later presented to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.

He suffered a wound to his neck and was treated and released on Friday.

Police found the 33-year-old in the Murrumbidgee River not far from Wilks Park, however the man refused to get out of the river.

He then swam to an island and climbed a tree.

He was arrested about 2am on Friday and taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition under police guard.

A crime scene was established and police found a pair of scissors and a firearm believed to have been used in the incident.

Both items are set to undergo forensic examination.

The 33-year-old has been charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail and faced the Wagga Wagga Local Court on Friday, where he was again refused bail to front the same court on October 16.

Inquiries into the whereabouts of the third man who allegedly shot the 33-year-old remain ongoing.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
