A young man who stabbed his mother with a paint scraper during a psychotic episode and told police he was “Lucifer” has been sentenced.
Jordan Fahy, 22, was convicted of reckless wounding (DV), a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment, in the Downing Centre District Court on Friday.
Her Honour Judge Nicole Noman SC sentenced Fahy to a year and 10 months imprisonment to be served in the community by way of an intensive corrections order.
Fahy was supported by family in court as he sat in the docks and nodded his head as details of the horrific attack were read.
The court was told Fahy had been experiencing deteriorating mental health, and a resurgence of psychosis at the time of the attack, which police described as “frenzied”.
On January 27, 2024, Fahy was looking inside garbage bins outside his mother’s apartment in Randwick in Sydney’s east and was holding a paint scraper he had found inside a nearby carpark.
Fahy then confronted his mother, a 47-year-old woman, and grabbed her from behind, pulling her hair and dragging her onto the ground.
Fahy then stabbed her 15 times while stating “God is good”.
He later told police officers he identified himself as “Lucifer”.
Two men came to the woman’s assistance and Fahy dropped the scraper.
His mother was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with wounds to her head, face and arms.
She spent five days in hospital and underwent surgery for her lacerations.
Fahy was arrested and his backpack, which contained books that police described as “questionable”, was seized as evidence.
The court was told Fahy had a history of mental illness and drug abuse, dating back to the age of 14.
He had no prior criminal history.
In her sentencing, Ms Noman said the offence was “reflective of his (Fahy’s) mental health issues”.
“He was of the view his mother would harm him and he had to punish her,” she said.
“But there is no suggestion he was unaware of his conduct.”
Ms Noman added the offence was of a “mid-range of seriousness”.
“These senseless acts of violence instil fear in not only the victim but in the community,” she said.
“The trauma of this attack will no doubt remain with the victim.”
Ms Noman said an ICO was appropriate given Fahy was now receiving appropriate treatment and medication for his mental illness.
As part of the order, Fahy must not commit any offence, must abstain from drugs and alcohol and provide a urine and blood sample to police, he must continue to receive treatment from a psychiatrist and he must continue to attend a drug and alcohol facility.
