A man has died and another was rushed to hospital following a helicopter crash in remote NSW.

The Super Puma chopper crashed in the morning near Corrong Road 40km west of Hay in the state’s Riverina region.

In a statement, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said it received a distress beacon signal from the US-registered helicopter about 10am with two people on board.

The helicopter was conducting a ferry flight from Broken Hill to Albury on the NSW-Victorian border, AMSA said.

“AMSA tasked a Victorian Air Ambulance HEMS helicopter from Bendigo and the AMSA Essendon-based Challenger rescue aircraft to initiate a search,” the spokesman said.

“A local skydiving aircraft assisting with the search located the crash site not long after.”

Emergency services were called to the scene about midday.

Paramedics treated a man in his 40s but he died at the scene.

The pilot, a 39-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and paramedics took him to Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the cause of the crash.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
