A police officer and a man have been left with serious injuries after a police-issued firearm was discharged during a “struggle” with a man in Brisbane’s south.
Officers were called to a Tamar St address in Annerley about 9.13am on Friday, following reports of a disturbance.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman said the “highly agitated” 26-year-old man was armed with a piece of timber in the backyard of the property.
“That male was not related to the property and the owners of the property did not know that individual,” Commissioner Wildman said.
Two officers – a 40-year-old senior constable and a first year constable – approached the man and attempted to de-escalate the situation.
A struggle began after the 26-year-old approached the officers, Commissioner Wildman said.
“The offender lunged for a firearm which belonged to the senior constable,” he said.
“During the struggle … the firearm discharged and the senior constable received a gunshot wound to the left inner-thigh.”
The first year constable was then forced to discharge his firearm, hitting the 26-year-old in the stomach twice.
He then began tactical first aid on his colleague using a tourniquet.
Commissioner Wildman said the man was still “very agitated” even after being shot and was tasered when other officers attended the property.
He was in a serious condition in hospital and is undergoing surgery.
“The 40-year-old senior constable is in a stable condition and is also receiving treatment,” Commissioner Wildman said.
“The first year constable has been treated for a bite injury and been released.”
Commissioner Wildman said there was an “active investigation” underway into the lead-up to the incident, and reiterated policing was an “extremely dangerous profession”.
“It involves officers attending jobs such as this, where a simple job can very quickly escalate into something that becomes a life-threatening situation,” he said.
The matter will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command, with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
Separate investigations will take place into alleged criminal activity.
“Those two investigations will be held concurrently,” Commissioner Wildman said.
Earlier, a Queensland Ambulance spokesman said crews were called to the scene at 9.49am and transported two patients to Princess Alexandra Hospital.
