Family members of a young woman killed in a fatal bus crash in Brisbane’s CBD have broken down in court upon learning the bus driver accused of carelessly driving at the time of the crash will fight his charge.

Lindsay Francis Selby, 70, is charged with careless driving causing the death of Tia Cameron, 18, back in March last year after he allegedly lost control of his bus along Edward St in Brisbane, causing it to mount a footpath.

Ms Cameron was leaving a nearby salon and pinned against the Anzac Square Arcade building in the CBD, later dying from her injuries.

Mr Selby was not required to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday for his brief mention, but members of Ms Cameron’s family packed out some of the seats in the public gallery.

Some broke down in tears and wept after solicitor Claire McGee told the court Mr Selby’s matter would be listed for a single-day trial in September.

One muttered “oh my God” upon the request.

The court was told Mr Selby’s legal team did not have a full brief yet but Ms McGee said directions could be made for further disclosure of material.

A trial review was ordered for September 2, before a single-day hearing was set down at Brisbane Magistrates Court on September 23.

Mr Selby, who remains on bail, was excused from appearing at the review.

Ms Cameron’s family quickly exited the courthouse and did not comment to waiting media.

Police initially charged Mr Selby in June last year, following a protracted investigation by the Forensic Crash Unit into the crash.

At the time, four other passengers and Mr Selby sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital for assessment.

In a tribute shortly after, Ms Cameron’s family said Tia was known as a bright and kind young woman with her “whole life ahead of her”.

Her family lamented Tia had been “stolen from us”.

“She was only 18 and had her whole life ahead of her,” Ms Cameron’s aunt Karma Te Awhitu said.

“She was beautiful, outgoing and unique, really unique. She loved the beach, the Gold Coast, fashion and … was really close with all of her family.”

The crash prompted a wave of grief, with Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner among those paying his own tributes at a memorial to Ms Cameron.

“What happened in Brisbane … was a devastating tragedy. It has left our entire community in shock,” Mr Schrinner shared in a post on social media at the time.

“To the family and friends of Tia Cameron who tragically lost her life, and to everyone impacted, the thoughts, prayers and hearts of Brisbane are with you.”
