‘Calculated and methodical’: Melbourne man allegedly stole identity and went on million-dollar shopping spree

A man accused of identity theft had a penchant for luxury cars, allegedly buying four Mercedes and a Jaguar during his crime spree.

A man has allegedly gone on a million-dollar spending spree, snatching up four Mercedes, jewellery and luxury items.

Victoria Police launched an investigation following a report of suspicious shopping activity in May, with officers soon finding millions of dollars had allegedly been stolen from another person’s bank account.

The alleged victim had moved to China nine years ago but used to live in Balwyn in Melbourne’s east.

Mail and documents pertaining to their identity had allegedly been stolen during a break-in, with the alleged offender using the items to access their bank account and transfer $2.3m.

A Jaguar F Pace, Toyota HiLux and four Mercedes were some of the alleged purchases made by the alleged thief, with the cars bought within just two months.

The man also allegedly purchased gold and diamond jewellery, Rolex watches, “significant amounts” of designer clothes and bags and household furniture.

Search warrants were executed across St Albans, Keilor Downs and South Morang on October 10, with a 2016 Jaguar F Pace, 2016 Mercedes C43, 2017 Mercedes C63 Coupe, 2017 Mercedes C6 Coupe and lounge suites seized by police.

A washing machine, fridge, dryer, dining table and chairs, TV, two entertainment units and a mattress were also seized during the search warrants.

It will also be alleged the man bought a 2017 Mercedes GLE63 before later selling it.

A 38-year-old man was arrested during the St Albans search warrant.

He has been charged with 23 offences, including open account with cash dealer in false name, two counts of operate account with cash dealer in false name, four counts obtain property by deception, and three counts of theft.

Other charges include traffic drug of dependence, possess heroin and methylamphetamine, handle/receive/retention of stolen goods

The St Albans man has been remanded in custody and is set to front the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 30.

Sergeant Stacey Maliko warned people against identity theft, claiming “you won’t get to enjoy any of these so-called benefits”.

“Identity theft is not an easy process, it’s a calculated and methodical crime that requires a significant level of time, organisation, and planning,” Sergeant Maliko said.

“However, we know these offenders are willing to wait to reap the benefits of stealing someone’s identity.

“Our message is simple – you won’t get to enjoy any of these so-called benefits, as we’ll find you and come knocking on your door.”

A 45-year-old St Albans woman, a 67-year-old Keilor Downs woman and a 40-year-old Keilor Downs man were also arrested on Thursday.

The three people have been interviewed and released pending further inquiries.

Police have urged anyone who believes their identity has been stolen to contact their financial institution, change account passwords and lodge a complaint with the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s ReportCyber.
