‘Tragic’: Details emerge after ‘wanted’ man shot by police at Townsville shopping centre

The man was allegedly “wanted” for a string of offences when he was shot by police at a shopping centre.

An allegedly “wanted” Aussie manremains in a critical condition after being shot by police at ashopping centre in Townsville.

Police received reports the man in his 20s was walking along Carthew St at Thuringowa Central about 3.16pm on Sunday afternoon.

A Queensland Police spokesman alleged the man was “wanted” in a statement.

Police arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and an officer discharged a firearmat the Willows Shopping Centre.

The man was given medical assistance immediately after.

He was taken to Townsville University Hospital, where he is receiving treatmentfor his injuries.

He remained in a critical but stable condition, a Queensland Health spokesman told NewsWire.

A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Acting Superintendent Damien Crosby said it was a “very fluid investigation”.

He said the man was wanted for multiple alleged offences when he was shot.

Police did not confirm whether the man was armed during the confrontation.

“All I can provide at this point in time is that the male was wanted by police, and known to police, and wanted for alleged serious criminal offences requiring specialist police attendance,” Superintendent Crosby said per the Townsville Bulletin.

Two crime scenes have been established, including “a portion” of the shopping centre where the man was apprehended.

“This is a tragic incident, and we pass on our thoughts to all involved,” Superintendent Crosby said.

Superintendent Crosby said police recognised “use of force can be a difficult topic” but added the incident “serves as a clear reminder of the dangers that police face every day”.

“The circumstances will be reviewed as a use of force option, but I would reiterate that the preservation of human life is a primary focus of police when attending any incident,” he said.

Anyone with information, including dashcam footage, has been urged to come forward to police.
