A pair of young Geelong baseballers have caught the eye of at least one Major League Baseball franchise.
This publication has confirmed a Boston Red Sox scout will be in Geelong on Wednesday night at Geelong Baseball Centre to check out local junior players, pitcher Riley Peoples and Jordan Ellis.
Both Peoples and Ellis, who have been plying their trade with the Geelong Baycats over the summer, represented the state in the under-16 national youth championships in Sydney last month for the second year in a row.
Ellis recently had four hits in a 12-2 drubbing of Port Melbourne last month in Victorian Premier Minor, plus a two-hitter the following match against Fitzroy.
It is understood a Philadelphia Phillies scout has also been at a couple of senior Baycats matches this season.
Fellow Baycats Tanner Stack and Will Cavanagh also played for Victoria in the under-18 division.
Baseball Victoria declined to comment on a scout visiting the Geelong region.
However, Baseball Australia reported last September that the Red Sox had been taken a keen interest in Australian prospects after snapping up teenager Adam Bates, then 18.
Boston had visited Bates at an under-18 national camp on the Gold Coast in August last year, after keeping an eye on him for several years.
“They had been following me and watching me develop for a few years,” Bates told the Baseball Australia website last year.
Bates became one of 34 Australians playing professional baseball in the United States.
It comes as former Guild All-Stars junior Liam Spence won his second successive ABL title with the Adelaide Giants on the weekend.
