North Queensland’s Bob Katter has firmed his grip on the issues that will matter for the region in the upcoming Federal election, saying the “Brisbane mentality is alive and well” and he would do anything he could to “destroy the Olympics’.
In true Katter fashion, he will demand his federal counterparts live up to their Bruce Highway promises and fight the ‘wokies’ causing coal mine closures.
While the Father of the House still hasn’t been officially endorsed by the party with an official decision expected from the Katter’s Australian Party president Ben Fusco later in the week, he made it clear he was still battling for the North.
After severe flooding across the Hinchinbrook, Mr Katter and other KAP members met with people across the region including farmers and producers from Ingham.
“My experience is that people were going into panic mode for weeks straight,” he said.
“They couldn’t get out either end.”
Mr Katter said priorities should include the widening and raising of the inland highway from The Lynd to Charters Towers, sealing and upgrading the inland highway from The Lynd to Hughenden and raising the Gairloch and Seymour River crossings on the Bruce.
He added that he would continue to push for a Cairns and Tablelands ‘Bridle Track Tunnel as a long-term solution to the state of the highway.
Speaking in parliament on February 13, Mr Katter updated the Prime Minister on the idea, with Anthony Albanese saying ‘we will fix it’.
When it comes to Queensland, Mr Katter said the LNP and ALP were solely focused on the capital.
“The party demands that they tow the party line which of course is a ‘wokey’ Brisbane Line,” he said.
“The Brisbane mentality is alive and well.”
His attacks did not stop there, with the veteran MP taking aim at the state government’s 2032 Olympics plans.
“As far as I’m concerned, anything I can do to destroy the Olympic Games, I most certainly will do,” Mr Katter said.
He was also critical of the progress of the state government’s Adult Crime Adult Time laws, saying the promises of more youths facing time in jailhad not come true.
“The current Premier of Queensland (David Crisafulli), he would have more (youth offenders) in jail by Christmas. There’s no jails to put them in and none of them have gone to jail,” Mr Katter said.
On Monday, the Townsville Bulletin revealed car thefts were up in the North, despite the new laws.
Mr Katter also felt that the ‘wokies’ in the Liberal and Labor parties had got their way.
“It’s pretty cliche but I think it’s still right to say people are finding it very hard to make ends meet,” he said.
“But the pressure on the coal industry is already in play. Mines close down but now no new ones will open.
“The coal industry is closing down as old mines run out of coal.”
Two candidates have been named to run against Mr Katter, Annette Swaine for the LNP and Douglas Lush for the Family First party.
