A meat worker’s horrific attacks on a puppy in Logan, where he kicked it with steel cap boots and strangled it, shortly after bashing his girlfriend, has seen him jailed by a court.

Blake James Blanche, 31, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Friday, August 11 to assault occasioning bodily harm and three charges of animal cruelty (domestic violence offences).

The court heard the father of two, meat worker from Toowoomba had an argument with his girlfriend over loud music that was blaring from a speaker, on August 26, last year.

The confrontation escalated into violence and animal abuse when Blanche picked up his girlfriend’s four-week-old puppy at chest height, strangled it and dropped it on the ground.

He also kicked the dog in the nose with steel cap boots because it was trying to ‘steal his steak’.

Blanche then held his girlfriend in a headlock for two minutes until her vision became blurred.

She bit him in the chest as Blanche threatened to hit her and squeezed her neck harder.

The victim grabbed Blanche’s leg and begged him to let go.

The court heard she suffered haemorrhaging to the neck and had bruised, red eyes.

Prosecutor Kelli Lemass said it was a concerning incident involving domestic violence.

“This was a cowardly and dangerous attack on a woman which was persistent and protracted,” she said.

“It was only good luck that she was not hurt any further.”

Judge Craig Chowdhury said domestic violence was far too frequent in the community as he sentenced Blanche to 340 days in prison.

“There is a major problem with domestic violence in our society,” he said.

“You need to rethink how you approach animals and treat other human beings.”

Blanche was placed on an 18 month probation order and had already served 340 days of pre-sentence custody.
