A Gold Coast truckie has lost his employment after downing several litres of beer at a Harbour Town watering hole and getting behind the wheel on a suspended licence.
Arundel man Bernie Brian Douglas Harrison, 45, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 16, where he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of liquor and driving without a licence.
The court heard Harrison was driving on Brisbane Rd at Arundel at about 12.30am on June 29 when he was pulled over for the purpose of a licence check and random breath test.
Officers smelled liquor on his breath as he spoke, the court heard, and Harrison told them he had drunk four jugs of XXXX at Harbour Town’s Dublin Docks Tavern, commencing about 4pm the afternoon prior.
His breath test returned a positive reading of 0.198 per cent blood-alcohol content – a smidgen under four times the legal limit.
A check of Harrison’s licence further revealed it had been suspended by the State Penalties Enforcement Register (SPER) due to unpaid fines, with the suspension commencing on May 4.
Harrison told the court, “I done [sic] the wrong thing, it’s cost me a job and time with my son.”
He said he had been employed as a truck driver, but had lost the employment due to the current charges.
Harrison further told the court he was unaware his licence had been suspended, and claimed the SPER debt related to an unpaid parking ticket.
Magistrate Steve Wettenhall told Harrison he had “far too much on board” to be driving.
Harrison was fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for 11 months.
Convictions were recorded.
