A Melbourne man is expected to be charged for allegedly performing the Nazi salute at the Cup Carnival in plain view of police officers.
Victoria Police confirmed they have commenced an investigation into the incident that allegedly took place at Oaks Day at Flemington Racecourse on Thursday.
It’s alleged that a 37-year-old Bell Post Hill man performed the salute at the famous racetrack while officers from the Melbourne Divisional Licensing Unit were patrolling the general admission area.
The officers then reviewed their body-worn camera footage to confirm the incident and kicked the man out of the race meeting.
There were no complaints by any members of the public who largely ignored the man.
At this stage, it is not believed that he has any extremist associations.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any further information on the alleged incident at Flemington on Thursday is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
The incident comes as a self-proclaimed “Hitler soldier”, who became the first Victorian to be imprisoned for performing a criminal Nazi salute, was immediately released on bail on Friday.
Neo-Nazi Jacob Hersant, 25, was sentenced to one month behind bars on Friday for performing the salute. He immediately appealed his sentence and sought release from custody, and was granted bail just 45-minutes after being locked up.
