A TOOWOOMBA hairdresser said she has been "overwhelmed" by the response to her offering of a low-sensory environment for families with autistic children.

Jazzy Lane Hair & Beauty Studio's Gay Hold said the idea was born of her work with the Clifford Park Special School formal donation project, which she has been involved in for the last three years.

"I've got a good friend who works... helping out families with kids with autism, and they explained the need for it," she said.

"I saw it as a very small sacrifice to make a big difference for those families in need."

Ms Hold said her salon would be closed to the general public for an hour every second Wednesday, from today for Tranquil Trims.

With no phones, no music, quiet voices and a "bag of goodies" for children to play with, she hopes to provide a safe, low-stimulation environment that will put children with autism at ease.

"The idea is to work with families and realise that every family is different, and every child is different," she said.

"I'm so excited to be able to have a go at this. I don't claim I'm an expert at all with it but I've done lots of research and have done everything in my power to make them feel safe when they visit."

After announcing the initiative on Facebook at the weekend, Ms Hold said the response had been "phenomenal" and she thanked the community for getting behind the project and getting the message out into the community.

She said adults with autism would be able to take part in the sessions as well.

Ms Hold said that if anyone had any resources or ideas they thought would be useful for the program, they should get in touch with her at Jazzy Lane Hair & Beauty Studio on Facebook, or by ringing 4637 8818.

The sessions will run every second Wednesday from 8-9am at the studio at 8 Duggan Street, Toowoomba.
