An exciting new chapter has begun for a Magnetic Island hotel after its management rights were snapped up by a luxury accommodation specialist with a portfolio of Airlie Beach hotels.

Conveniently situated nearby the Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal at 146 Sooning St, the four-star rated Grand Mercure Apartments Magnetic Island has 124 self-contained one, two and three bedroom apartments which offer spectacular views.

At Hotel Group holds the management rights for nine accommodation assets in the Whitsunday region including The Sebel Whitsundays, Marina Shores, Waterfront Whitsunday, Water’s Edge Resort, and Whitsunday Vista Holiday Apartments.

Captivated by the “magical” beaches, bushwalks and wildlife during his visits to Magnetic Island where he owns a unit, at Hotel Group managing director Jeff Aquilina regarded the island as the ideal location to expand his portfolio.

With the support of ResortBrokers’ long-time Townsville agent Des Fagg, Mr Aquilina began the process of acquiring the management rights a year ago, before they were officially purchased for 15 years in an off-market transaction at the end of March.

“We felt this was a unique opportunity to capitalise on the sensational location and the natural beauty that Magnetic Island offers, which is quite different to Airlie Beach where our existing hotels are located,” Mr Aquilina said.

“Grand Mercure Apartments Magnetic Island is one of the largest accommodation properties on Magnetic Island. It’s quite a spectacular spot to operate a business.

“We are conscious that we have a role to play in both the preservation of the island and bringing tourism to the island while respecting the fact that locals want it to remain a pristine natural environment.”

The four-level property features four swimming pools, four gymnasiums, conference room, gated-security, and Wi-Fi throughout.

Mr Aquilina said they intended to partner with international travel agents and Townsville Enterprise, to showcase the island and the property to Europe, as well as the domestic market, where it could hold its own against other high profile destinations like Hamilton Island and Daydream Island.

“It’s a great winter sojourn to come out from the colder southern states and enjoy some time on Maggie,” he said.

“The real kicker is that it’s 20 minutes from the mainland, so it’s really easy to access and enjoy what’s got to offer.”

ResortBrokers’ Des Fagg described the transfer as “an astute purchase”

“Grand Mercure Apartments Magnetic Island is one of Townsville’s most desirable luxury holiday properties,” he said.

Its location just beside the Coral Sea and Marine Reserve gives it magnificent views of Townsville and Cleveland Bay, and the resort’s transport connections couldn’t be better, being only 50 metres from the ferry terminal.”
