Angels take flight from new Wellcamp Airport

A CHARITY that co-ordinates flights for financially and medically-needy people will have its first flight out of Wellcamp Airport today.

A CHARITY that co-ordinates flights for financially and medically-needy people will have its first flight out of Wellcamp Airport today.

It will be the first of many missions out of the new airport for Angel Flight.

The airport has waived landing fees after already donating more than $8000 to the charity at its open day.

The flight will transport patients Mick Barbe, 78, and his wife Rhonda, 75, back to St George following medical treatment in Toowoomba.

The mission will be the only one in Queensland today.

AIRPORT BUILT AND FLYING IN AN AMAZING 19 MONTHS

"We are delighted to welcome our first charity flight to the airport," Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport general manager Phil Gregory said.

Pilot Tom White started assisting Angel Flight in 2014 and today's mission on board his Cessna 4141 will be his 15th for the charity.

There have been reports that the aviation authority's recent changes would affect Angel Flight, but for the moment it is all systems go.

Since 2004, Angel Flight has completed 547 flights in and out of Toowoomba Airport, travelling to and from regional towns.

Angel Flight launched as an Australian charity in April 2003 and is the initiative of Bill Bristow AM, a successful businessman, experienced pilot and past winner of Queensland Australian of the Year.

Mr Bristow witnessed charity flying in the US firsthand and decided to start a service in Australia.

"With about 30 per cent of the Australian population living outside metropolitan areas a very large number of people do not have easy access to major hospitals and treatment centres.

"I decided I had to do something about it."
