Geelong dynamo Chloe Scheer will miss her side’s blockbuster semi-final against Melbourne after scans confirmed she has a hairline fracture in her right shoulder.

Scheer suffered the blow in the first quarter and didn’t return to the field, with Cats assistant football Brett Johnson saying she will not require surgery and that the injury isn’t as severe as first feared,

The 24-year-old, who is the equal third highest goalscorer in the competition with 19 majors, hasn’t been ruled out for the season if the Cats were to upset Melbourne and advance further.

“Chloe has been one of the most dominating and powerful forwards so far this season and is an important player to our team and it is unfortunate that she was injured in our win against Essendon,” Johnson said.

“While we are disappointed for Chloe, scans (on Monday) have revealed the injury isn’t as severe as first thought and Chloe won’t require surgery.

“Chloe will commence her rehabilitation program and we will continue to monitor her progress and assess her availability should we win on Sunday.”

An emotional Scheer was consoled by teammates on the ground after the final siren.

Cats ball-magnet Amy McDonald said post-match that the Cats will use Scheer’s injury as motivation to play for her but conceded that she is irreplaceable.

“It’s just another reason and person we’ve got to go out there and play for next week. When Scheery is firing, we’re firing and I think that was probably evident in the first quarter before she went down,” McDonald said.

“She’s a huge hole and we can’t replace her but again it provides opportunity for whoever person that comes into the team is and just another reason to go out there next week and play bloody hard.”

In better news, Scheer was selected as an AFLW mark of the year finalist for her climb against Richmond in round nine.
