Geelong is hopeful that bookends Jeremy Cameron and Sam De Koning will return for its important clash with Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.

Cameron missed the heavy loss to Gold Coast with concussion while De Koning was a late scratching with a minor hamstring complaint, pulling up sore after their training session in Darwin.

Both will be crucial inclusions if they are passed fit, with De Koning a possible match-up for the dangerous Jesse Hogan and Cameron kicking seven goals in his last two matches against his former side.

Champion goalkicker Tom Hawkins, Mitch Duncan and Rhys Stanley were all managed for the trip to Darwin, with Hawkins set to break legend Joel Selwood’s Geelong games record in the likely event he returns against the Giants.

Captain Patrick Dangerfield returned to the main group this week and will spend another 1-3 weeks on the sidelines, with the Cats losing three-straight games without him in the side.

Cats assistant football boss Brett Johnson said both will be a test for this week but that Cameron was well placed in his recovery.

“He’s (Cameron) ticking all the boxes, getting really well looked after by our medical team,” Johnson said.

“At this stage it’s on track, but there’s still a bit to play out in terms of the protocols for the rest of the week, but we’re hopeful that ‘Jezza’ gets out there.”

“Sammy just pulled up, after training up in Darwin last week, a bit tight, so (we took) a really conservative approach.

“He will be a test this week, we’ll see how he goes at training and how he progresses, but we’re hopeful he’ll get up.”

“Patty is tracking really well, he’s leaving no stone unturned with his rehab and is super professional.”

Meanwhile, uncapped ruckmen Mitch Edwards (back, one week) and Joe Furphy (ankle, two weeks) are tracking towards their first games of the season.
