AFL 2024: Geelong accept one-match suspensions for Mark Blicavs and Jhye Clark

Two Cats were offered suspensions by the match review officer, and the club has made a call. And it puts an in-form reserves player in contention.

Geelong will be without important utility Mark Blicavs and young midfielder Jhye Clark for its clash with Richmond on Saturday night after the Cats accepted their one-match suspensions.

Blicavs and Clark were both handed one-match bans for separate hits on Giants rebounder Lachie Whitfield.

Clark bumped Whitfield as he disposed of the ball in the second quarter and clashed heads with the defender, with the Giant leaving the ground before returning to play out the match.

Meanwhile, Blicavs left the ground and hit Whitfield in the fourth quarter in a similar incident, with both adjudged as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact by the match review.

It is a double blow for Geelong’s struggling midfield group.

The versatile Blicavs has been used in the ruck, as an inside midfielder and on the wing this season, while Clark played one of his better games against the Giants with 15 touches.

Geelong opted to play Jack Bowes as the substitute in the loss to the Giants and dropped Brandan Parfitt despite some promising form this season, with both in contention to return to the starting 22.

Uncapped midfielder Mitch Hardie is another potential candidate after some dominant VFL form, tallying 37 disposals, 19 marks, nine clearances, a goal and 150 SuperCoach points on the weekend.

Hardie, 26, was taken by the Cats in last year’s mid-season draft from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens.
