Members of the Australian Defence Force will face off against some of the Territory’s top soccer talent for the annual Remembrance Day Football Match at Darwin Football Stadium on Friday.

The game will raise funds for Legacy, which supports the families of veterans experiencing grief, loss and hardship.

In its fourth year, the match aims to bring soccer fanatics and the ADF community together ahead of Remembrance Day to honour the sacrifices made by past and present service men and women.

Navy Petty Officer Jessica Gunning said she was proud to represent the ADF women’s team in this year’s match.

“It’s an honour to be able to wear the uniform and partake and support the ADF and make them proud,” she said.

“Tri Service plays a big part so it will be good getting involved with the navy, army and air force to work together and see what we can bring.”

15-year-old Arman Dharni is the best male soccer player under 20 in the NT and said it was a privilege to play in the match and honour our servicemen and women.

“We’re not playing to win or lose, we’re playing to remember the people that lost their lives in the World War and play for the ANZACS,” he said.

“It’s a good way to bring the community and football together so I’m looking forward to it.”

Dharni reckons it will be an “easy win” against the ADF teams but expects the ADF to “put on a fight.”

The event is free with gates opening at 5:30pm and attendees able to make a gold coin donation in support of Legacy on arrival.

A commemoration ceremony will be held at 6pm before the Northern Desert Roses and women’s ADF team take the field for the first match of the night at 6:30pm followed by the men’s team against the Northern Knights at 8:15pm.
