WORK has begun on the final layer of Wellcamp Airport’s runway with 100m of asphalt already laid.

WORK has begun on the final layer of Wellcamp Airport's runway with 100m of asphalt already laid.

Project manager and Wagners director Denis Wagner said it would take a team of 12 workers about six weeks to seal the 2.87km landing strip.

"It's a big job but we're happy with the results so far," Mr Wagner said.

"We've also started all the underground earthworks for the runway lights and stormwater."

Mr Wagner said construction of the airport's 8000sq m terminal structure was now complete and the fit-out was well under way.

"It's going to be a very impressive building with a contemporary design using lots of glass and light, simple clean lines and a mix of timber, polished stone flooring and exposed concrete features," Mr Gregory said.

The terminal was designed by Canberra-based Guida Moseley Brown Architects, who have won numerous awards for its work on the Canberra Airport terminal, including the Australian Airports Association Capital City Airport of the Year (2013).

Wagner said Toowoomba-based FK Gardner and Sons were responsible for the terminal's construction.

"The tiles are going down now and fit-out is on track for hand-over in early September," Mr Gregory said.

Other terminal works also include car parking, bus, taxi and hire car areas, ticketing desks, baggage retrieval, departure lounges, cafes, bar and retail areas, office tenancies and airline clubs.

Mr Wagner said almost 200 staff and contractors were working on the airport project to ensure it was fully operational by the end of this year.

The crew has also started the on terminal access road and main entry, which will feature a composite fibre vehicle bridge.
