Newly released dashboard camera footage has revealed the terrifying moment two men are chased by an axe-wielding driver who rams into their car twice.
Occurring on the M1 Motorway at Ewingsdale, near Byron Bay, a driver in a silver car can be seen overtaking the two men in a Mercedes-Benz, as he is seen flashing an axe outside his window.
The video which was uploaded to by the YouTube account Dash Cam Owners Australia also shows the driver stopping in front of the Mercedes, where he begins shouting at the Mercedes before they make an U-turn in an apparent attempt to drive away.
However their back dashboard camera revealed they were followed by the silver car, which then rams them twice. On the second instance, the silver car can be seen veering off onto the left hand side of the road and onto the grassy verge.
Miraculously, despite the pursuit, the two men in the Mercedes remained calm during the ordeal.
In the comments on the video, many applauded their ability to continue driving during the high-pressure situation.
“Glad the rager received a two-year sentence. And good on these lads for remaining calm,” wrote one commenter.
“How were you guys so calm. Honestly I would have crumbled the second he hit my car. Awesome job lads, glad you’re OK,” shared another.
“That was intense. And you got it all on camera, thanks for that. This is like an assassination attempt like movie car chases.”
While the terrifying chase happened in August 2021, the offending driver has since appeared before the courts where he pleaded guilty to predatory driving and being armed with intent to commit indictable offence, among other charges. He’s also been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 10 months.
The crime has also been linked to a wider Strike Force Bench investigation looking into the criminal group ‘Loyal Crims’ or ‘LC’.
The organised crime gang has been linked to several violent crimes in Northern NSW including serious assaults, drug supply and possession, firearm supply and use, armed robbery and vehicle theft.
As of December 2021, four additional people have been arrested and charged with matters currently before the courts.
