Mother and teen son die in the third serious crash on Tasmanian road in weeks

This Tasmanian road has been the site of three terrifying accidents in the last two weeks – the latest claiming the lives of a mother and her teenage son.

A Tasmanian road, listed among the 13 most dangerous crash sites in the southern state, has claimed the lives of a mother and her teenage son.

This brings the total number of serious accidents on Brinktop Rd to three in less than two weeks.

Emergency services were called to the stretch of road at Penna, near Richmond in Tasmania’s southeast, around 5pm on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old mother and her 16-year-old son were found dead inside a red Daewoo.

Paramedics arrived on the scene following reports of a head-on collision and made attempts to revive them but were unsuccessful.

Two passengers in a blue Holden involved in the crash, another mother and son, were seriously injured and taken to hospital.

A third car is believed to have been involved and an investigation is under way.

“We believe the third car may have crossed to the incorrect side of the road for some unknown reason,” Detective Inspector Michael Smith said.

“That caused the driver of the red Daewoo to take evasive action, losing control of that vehicle, coming into the path of the oncoming blue Holden Cruze.”

A 60-year-old woman died following a crash on Brinktop Rd on April 30.

The following day, another woman was seriously injured in a crash with a learner driver.

The road was the recipient of $260,000 in federal black-spot funding last year – designated to 13 dangerous crash sites in the southern state.
