Video has captured the scary moment a man confronted a woman with a large pickaxe during a road rage incident in Melbourne.

In the footage, which appeared to be taken from the car behind, a man dressed in orange workwear could be seen tapping the window of a car with a pickaxe and aggressively pointing his fingers while they were stopped at the traffic lights on Queens Road in Albert Park.

3AW Drive host Jacqui Felgate described the vision as “frightening”.

Felgate said she was told by a witness the man had allegedly cut off one driver and got out of his vehicle to threaten another driver with the pickaxe.

“The pickaxe is the size of a shovel and he is tapping it against the window and yelling at the person inside,” she said.

“Imagine if there were children in the back seat of that car.”

Victoria’s assistant commissioner for road policing, Glenn Weir, said they had spoken to the woman and she did not want to take any action, adding he believed there was “a bit more to the story”.

“But that doesn’t matter,” he told the radio station. “The guy in the orange work gear carrying the pick[axe] up to someone and banging on their window with it is completely unacceptable.

“I don’t know what world that guy lives where he thinks that’s acceptable behaviour regardless of what the other drivers have done.”

Mr Weir urged people who see this kind of behaviour to ring triple-0 first instead of posting it on Instagram.

“We could have got there and taken some action,” he said.

The top road cop said police would continue to talk with the motorist despite her not wanting to take further action, “to see if we can get to the bottom of it”.
