Police are appealing for public assistance in their investigation after a child was fatally struck by a vehicle.

A child has died in Melbourne’s southeast following a collision on Sunday afternoon.

About 5pm, a vehicle struck the “young child”, whose age is unknown, on Arrino Crescent in Hallam.

Emergency services treated the child at the scene, but they could not be saved.

While the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established, police have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene.

Investigations into the fatal collision are ongoing and police are yet to confirm whether any charges have been laid.

This death brings the total lives lost on the state’s roads for the year to 219 compared with 187 at the same time last year.

Police have urged any witnesses to the incident or anyone who has footage or further information to contact Crime Stoppers.
