A police operation on the Sydney Harbour Bridge caused commuter chaos with lenghty traffic delays.

The incident unfolded just after 6am on Tuesday, with one southbound lane, The Cahill Expressway, remaining closed as of 7am.

All lanes of traffic are now open as the operation has come to an end.

Despite all being resolved on the bridge, traffic remains heavy and thoroughly congested and motorists are urged to plan for delays and take detours where possible.

Heavy traffic was backed up for kilometres towards the Anzac Bridge, with drivers encouraged to consider taking the Harbour Tunnel or Victoria Road instead.

Aerial photographs of the major roadway show flashing lights from several emergency responder vehicles and traffic moving at a glacial pace across the Bridge.

Police assured the public there was no threat to their safety.

Live Traffic urged drivers to exercise caution if driving in the area and expect delays on their early morning commute.
