Volkswagen has teased its new pint-sized electric SUV.
Based on the coming ID. 2 electric hatchback, the zero-emissions high-rider is expected to be called the ID. 2 X and replace the T-Cross in the brand’s line-up.
Volkswagen is reportedly aiming to launch the little electric SUV in 2026.
The ID. 2 hatch will be the brand’s cheapest EV, with prices starting at less than €25,000 ($41,000) and the SUV version is likely to come at a €5000 ($8000) premium according to Autocar.
Details are scarce for the SUV but it is likely to mimic the hatchback version.
This means it’s in line to have a driving range of up to 450km and a single electric motor making 166kW that drives the front wheels.
According to UK publication AutoExpress the ID. 2 the cabin is expected to have circa-11-inch driver display and a 13-inch central screen, which is larger than found in the bigger ID. 3 hatchback. It also deviates from VW’s current interior design by adding physical buttons for climate controls.
Earlier this year at the Munich motor show VW also debuted a GTI version of the ID.2.
It’ll have classic GTI features and will be front-wheel drive only, which the brand says makes it cheaper and easier to build, while delivering excellent cabin space and a big boot.
No word yet on what would power the ID. GTI but a similar-sized concept from sister brand Cupra claims to pump out 320kW
Volkswagen is beefing up its electric car line-up ahead of the company’s deadline to stop production of petrol and diesel cars by next decade.
The brand is gearing up to go on the electric offensive in Australia in 2024.
It will launch the ID. 4 electric mid-size SUV and an SUV-coupe version called the ID.5.
These two models will be joined by the ID. Buzz and electric people mover that reinvents the legendary Kombi van.
VW is tipped to bring the ID. 3 early in 2025, too.
