Mazda reveals prices for new Toyota HiLux rival

Utes are big business in Australia and Mazda has revealed the prices of its new tradie chariot. Have they got it right?

Mazda has revealed how much its new BT-50 dual-cab ute will cost when it goes on sale on October 1.

The previous generation BT-50 was co-developed with the Ford Ranger, but the new version is built in conjunction with the Isuzu D-Max. And the new BT-50 brings that brand’s reputation for rugged reliability.

There are three model grades: XT, XTR and GT.

The entry-level XT version is available as either cab chassis or pick-up body style and can be had with either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Prices for the XT versions start at $44,090 (before on-road costs) and rise to $53,260.

Mid-tier XTR versions start at $49,470 for an automatic cab chassis version, while adding a tub tray brings the price up to $57,210.

Range-topping GT versions are $56,990 when equipped with a manual transmission or $59,990 when paired with an auto.

The interior has undergone a big overhaul.

Mazda has priced the BT-50 several thousand above the mechanically similar Isuzu, but it is on par with top selling dual-cabs the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

All versions are powered by the same 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine making 140kW and 450Nm found in the recently launched D-Max. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The new BT-50 was co-developed with Isuzu.

There’s a one-tonne-plus payload and a towing capacity of 3500kg.

All models feature a high level of specification including a seven-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth and digital radio.

Mazda has packed the BT-50 with plenty of safety kit, including auto emergency braking, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist rear cross-traffic alert and radar cruise control standard on all models.

The top-spec BT-50 costs more than $60,000 drive-away.

High-spec versions get a range of exterior styling upgrades such as bigger alloy-wheels and chrome highlight as well as luxury features including heated leather seats and satnav.

The BT-50 features more SUV-like styling, which might turn off some ute buyers who flock towards the tougher looks of rival machines.

Mazda guarantees the BT-50 with a five-year/unlimited km warranty.
