The latest version of Kia’s small car isn’t small at all.
Formerly known as the Cerato, the brand’s Toyota Corolla rival is now called the Kia K4. Larger than the previous version, Kia says the car technically meets the car industry’s definition of medium-sized sedans such as the Toyota Camry.

Bigger than early Commodores, there’s no doubt this is a roomy model that stretches the definition of what a small car could be.
The switch to K4 is a bold move for Kia, as the Cerato name secured 200,000 sales in Australia, and all those customers need to know the Cerato has been replaced by a new model.
Initially launching in sedan form – with a hatchback to follow – the Kia K4 is longer and wider than rivals.

It’s an odd-looking thing in the metal, with a sleek front-end styling that meets a sloping fastback roof and a squared-off window treatment that appears awkward from some angles, and the relatively small opening to a large cargo area might encourage customers to pick the more practical hatch.
Modern looks carry over to the cabin, where every model has a 12.3-inch central infotainment display with smartphone mirroring.

Basic versions have a simplified electronic dashboard in front of the driver, while premium models get a sophisticated 12.3-inch digital display.
Other cabin changes include the addition of smart keys, USB-C outlets, and improved connectivity with wireless vehicle updates.
Though spacious dimensions and modern lines work in its favour, the entry-level K4 feels quite basic.
Prices start from $32,990 drive-away for a bare-bones model with a plastic steering wheel and a simple 2.0-litre non-turbo, non-hybrid engine with 112kW and 192Nm.
It’s an ordinary motor that feels noisy and undernourished compared to turbo and hybrid alternatives. A hybrid engine similar to that found in the Hyundai i30 Sedan is on Kia’s wish list.
The brand expects customers to gravitate toward the range-topping K4 GT-Line loaded with kit including heated and cooled seats trimmed in faux leather, twin digital 12.3-inch displays, a sunroof and premium hi-fi.
All models have seven airbags – including a new front centre airbag between the driver and passenger – along with auto emergency braking, active cruise control and a driver monitoring system. Kia expects premium models to get a five-star safety rating, though the entry-level car with a simpler auto emergency braking system might have to settle for four.
The electronic safety aids are better calibrated than what you might find in rival machines, and Kia has made it easy to mute annoying beeps and boops. Customers with $46,990 in the budget can drive-away in the K4 GT-Line model.
It uses less fuel – 6.7L/100km – to send 142kW and 264Nm to the front tyres through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Quieter, punchier, and more efficient, it’s the pick of the two motors offered here.
Though it has a turbocharged engine, Kia is at pains to point out the K4 GT-Line is not a successor to the discontinued Cerato GT.
That model was pitched as an entry-level performance car with more power, a dual-clutch transmission, firmer suspension, a racier cabin and sporty Michelin tyres. This Kia K4 GT-Line is a different kind of car – and it would want to be, given the Cerato GT cost a full $10,000 less than this K4 back in 2021.
Benchmarked alongside the comfortable Honda Civic Hybrid, as opposed to the red-hot Civic Type R, it promises an effortless, stress-free experience as opposed to driving thrills. And it delivers.
Luxury features including a Harman Kardon stereo, ambient lighting, heated steering wheel and powered seats deliver a plush experience.
Combine that with a well-sorted ride from locally sorted suspension the result is refinement you usually find in a larger class of vehicle.
Which makes sense, as this really isn’t a small car.
VERDICT
Big on features, with big car composure, there’s nothing small about the Kia K4.
